A hospital bystander is a non-medical support person who stays with a patient in the hospital to provide comfort, supervision, and basic assistance. They do not perform nursing tasks; instead, they focus on safety, companionship, and helping the patient with simple needs that make their hospital stay easier.
What you can expect
- Staying with the patient so they are never alone
- Assisting with basic movements such as sitting up or repositioning
- Helping with meals, water, and simple daily needs
- Companionship and emotional comfort
- Alerting nurses if the patient needs medical attention
- Supporting communication between the patient, family, and hospital staff
- Keeping the patient’s space tidy and organised
- Grocery shopping and food delivery
